At our first session, Charlie completely put me at ease. He is very friendly and approachable and discussed my goals and what I was hoping to achieve. “I had a bit of anxiety starting at David Lloyds as it was a new environment and felt slightly intimidated as it was very different to my previous gym. I also felt as if going to the gym was a chore, mainly when I had to train upper body.
Charlie has really helped me ‘fall in love with the process’ of training as he has made the gym enjoyable, and explained what exercise works what muscle which helps me understand the importance of each exercise so now I don’t skip any exercises (especially upper body exercises).

Before we started working together I had reservations as I’m a long time runner it’s important to me that any strength training compliments my running but I am also conscious that I am a lot stronger in my legs than I am in my upper body. “I had never been much of a gym goer, and found the whole experience of going on my own very intimidating. Having a 20 minute ‘induction’ at previous gyms, doesn’t give you any real understanding or any inclination as to technique on different pieces of equipment.
This all changed massively when I had my introduction session with Charlie at DL. On that session we sat down and went through my goals, but also my previous gym experience. This highlighted that feeling of being intimidated, but also set in my mind some clear goals and also expectations. Charlie was experienced but kind and understanding. I knew that I wasn't suddenly going to turn into the Hulk or slim down in days, but working hard at a set programme with help and guidance. I really felt my goals were achievable now I had Charlie in my corner.
An unexpected change after my first session was that I now felt comfortable to be able to train by myself. I have no doubt that this was solely the work of my new PT. Within that first session Charlie was able to describe movements in a way that just seemed to click, making small adjustments when I wasn’t quite getting it right, but also explaining the reasons behind the technique.

“With previous knowledge of PTs, I was worried about how I would connect with that person over the session. I'm quite antisocial by nature, so suddenly having to spend 45 mins a week with someone I didn't know was quite unsettling. I also struggle with how I perceive myself in the gym, where past experience would cause me to 'blow off' exercises if the gym was too busy or people were around me, as I was worried they would look at me weirdly as if I was doing the wrong thing.
Charlie is incredibly warm and approachable. He takes great interest in yourself not just as a client but as a friend, which allows him to modify sessions based on factors to aid you e.g. recent injuries, mood. He would never force me to do anything, and always modified technique and exercise to my requirements. Charlie also has a great expanding knowledge, so when demonstrating exercises, he helps you to understand all aspects of it such as what muscles it targets, how to tailor for different muscle groups, and how to progress through further reps/weights. I now feel fully sustainable when on my own in the gym, and do not feel the stress of others watching as Charlie has made me sure I'm training correctly.
I'm noticing consistent and steady improvements of my overall strength when it comes to the phases and exercises Charlie has laid out. I feel more physically adept during my day to day now, and find myself full of more energy and not lethargic compared to before. It's improved my mental health by making my mind clearer, as I'm able to get that endorphin rush in the exercises that helps me know I'm making progress. And, I can really see the physical aspects too. I'm bigger; but in a good way!

Make Exercise Fun Again
I've never used a personal trainer before prior to Charlie. I wasn't sure what to expect. Charlie was friendly, approachable and put any reservations I had at ease. I'd never worked with weights and Charlie patiently showed me how to use the equipment safely and effectively. He listened to what my goals were and helped me to work towards these. "I had reservations about joining the Gym again. I had tried over the last few years but injury or, more realistically, fear of re-injury/aggravated injury, was preventing me from actually really putting in the effort. When I joined David Lloyd, I was offered three PT sessions which, at the time, I didn’t want to do as I didn’t want to be put out of my comfort zone or “beasted” where I would just be riddled with injury again. After a couple of days I had a call from Charlie Blake, a new PT at David Lloyd, he had seen that I had recently joined, had these PT sessions available and wanted to discuss my goals and my expectations from the gym. I noticed how immediately comfortable I felt when having this conversation and knew that he was actually listening to what I had to say, my worries, my concerns and taking them on board and not just saying “yes” and planning to recycle another of his clients workout plans. Charlie spoke to me, out of his own time, for at least 15 minutes to ensure he got all the information he required to ensure a personalised work out plan specifically designed to reduce my concerns of re-injury and build me towards a healthier, stronger body. Any exercises that tweaked my neck and shoulder complaints he adjusted the exercise slightly to incorporate the muscle group safely and comfortably. I am now regularly at the gym 7 days a week, whether that is putting in a session in the gym, or going for a swim, my confidence has grown exponentially. Do I still have aches, pains and niggles? Yes, but through Charlies advice and confidence in my abilities, he has given me the belief in my performance to know my body and how to recognise any physical complaints and deal with them correctly. All of the above is great, all the expected qualities in a professional personal trainer. What sets Charlie apart from the rest is his people skills. His genuine desire to know and understand his clients. To ensure that they get the best experience out of the gym whether that is in one of his PT sessions or not. “I am 45 and have never been to a Gym before as I have always felt intimidated as I am not strong and have recently had 9 months with no exercise due to a back injury. I chose to have a PT as I had no idea what I was doing. I have to admit I was also uncertain when I saw Charlie being both young and in good condition! Those uncertainties were quickly put aside. “I was a little nervous before starting with Charlie. There were the usual nerves before starting a proper programme of training; I was also nervous about how my body would cope. But Charlie assuaged these worries with his quiet optimism. He planned some really good workouts which pushed me — really pushed me — to improve without leaving me shattered and unable to function for the rest of the day. He always insists on warmup-ups before and stretching after. And he takes an interest in the exercise I do when I’m not with him.

"The main reservation that I had before working with Charlie was sustainability. Having a gym routine that I would be able to keep up with in the long term while also being able to do activities outside of work was crucial. I also wanted to learn more about different machines and equipment in the gym that I hadn’t tried before.
After starting with Charlie, we spoke about how many days would be achievable based on my current schedule and he constructed a plan that I was able to follow in a way that made sense to me. There was a trial-and-error process of figuring out what I felt comfortable with and he incorporated different exercises that I would not have considered doing on my own. “My main reservation was that I wouldn’t be able to fit in having weekly training. I was also worried that after an initial period, I would lose motivation and revert to bad habits. However Charlie has been very flexible with the time and day of my session so that I can usually make it every single week (or catch up very quickly thereafter). Instead of losing motivation I have ended up being more motivated as Charlie is very inspiring and positive and encouraging of my progress.
As far as achievements go, I have seen an increase in my commitment to going to the gym as I actively want to lift more weights. I often do not notice that I am lifting personal bests as Charlie is very good at motivating me to lift more. I have seen a greater commitment to going to the gym but I have also noticed that my injuries are less frequent and I recover quicker as I am stronger. I did have a reservation about how I would do personal training when I kept getting injuries playing sport, but actually I am now much stronger and can do more of the racquet sports I love.
